Soot Stamping & Transposed Soot Stamping

By: Susan Chong

*Please give proper credit if printing or sharing this tutorial

Supplies Needed:

Candle (use one that has an "exposed" flame)

Glossy White Cardstock

Versamark, Clear Pigment, or Embossing Ink

Tissue or Kleenex

Krylon Workable Fixative or any spray on Sealer

Variety of LIWP Rubber Stamps

Many of the steps are similar in both Soot Stamping and Transposed Soot Stamping. There will be some repeat information within this tutorial!

Soot Stamping:

Light your candle. (Use in a well ventilated, but "still" room) Pick up your Glossy White or Brayered Glossy paper and CAREFULLY pass the paper through the flame.

You want the flame to touch the paper, but NOT catch on fire. Keep it moving steadily around until the paper is completely covered in soot. Yes! There will be smoke!

CAREFULLY lay the paper down onto a safe surface to cool. You will need to protect your cooling surface because the soot will very easily come off the paper or smudge! Use caution when you pick up and move the paper. Even the lightest touch will remove the soot.

Using a DRY stamp, gently stamp the image directly onto the sooted paper. Lift directly up. ANY TOUCH will smear, remove, or smudge the soot!! Notice the flaws in this panel. You will have to experiment a little to get the "right touch". Don’t get frustrated…keep trying!!

On the plus side, these "flaws" can add a lot of character to a project!! Don’t discard….you may find the perfect project for your "blooper" sheets!

Blooper Sheet!—but, not unsalvageable!

Once you have achieved the images you desire, seal with 2-4 light layers of fixative or sealer. Finish card as desired.

Transposed Soot Stamping:

Ink your stamps with your Versamark or Embossing Ink and carefully stamp onto the White Glossy or Brayered Glossy Cardstock.

Light your candle. (Use in a well ventilated, but "still" room) Pick up your paper and CAREFULLY pass the paper through the flame—stamped image side against the flame... You want the flame to touch the paper, but NOT catch on fire. Keep it moving steadily around until every stamped image and the paper around it is completely covered in soot. Again, there will be smoke!

Make sure the entire piece is completely covered in soot!

CAREFULLY lay the paper down onto a safe surface to cool. You will need to protect your cooling surface because the soot will very easily come off the paper or smudge! Use caution when you pick up and move the paper. Even the lightest touch will remove the soot.

After the paper has cooled, carefully wipe away the excess soot with a tissue. You will need to be the judge on how "sooty" you would like your card to be! Even if you wipe of most of the soot, you will still leave some nice smoke stains/rings on the paper.

The heat from the flame seals the soot to the ink. The image will now be a neat smoky black color.

(Won’t these trees make a great Halloween card??!)

After you have the look you desire, you must seal the paper with fixative or sealer. Hairspray will not be sufficient for this technique.

Once the sealer has dried (you may want to use 2 light coats) finish card as desired.

Blooper Alert!!

You CAN over melt your ink. Take care and experiment until you are able to cover your images in soot without over melting the ink. You may want to try a different kind of ink if you have constant trouble with this!!

You can see the over melted areas. The blob on the bottom moon on the left and, the symbol and flower areas of the geisha image on the right. Those will not wipe off and the image is not usable as is……. You can always save for a mosaic or bargello card!

Sample Card:

Notice that I was able to use my "Blooper" materials for this card! J I wiped off the sun panel and covered with a VERY light coat of Lumiere paint. Then I overstamped the sun image using Yellow and Blazing Red StazOn ink. It created a "shadowy" effect.

Sometimes mistakes can be salvaged into an interesting project! J
