Metal Embossing
by Jenna Roby
- Rubber stamp
- Copper tooling foil
- StazOn permanent ink
- Permanent markers
- Butane mini torch
- Long handled tweezers or forceps
- Tracing wheel (used for tracing sewing patterns,
has little spikes and is used like a rotary cutter)
- Orange stick or metal stylus tool & rubber
embossing mat
- Really strong adhesive for metal
1)
Stamp the image onto a piece of copper foil using the permanent ink and
let dry for at least 5 minutes or until totally dry.
2)
Holding onto the corner of the copper piece using the tweezers, use the
torch to alter the color of the copper around the image. Let cool. (Do not over
heat or the colors will go back to copper and cannot be brought back by more
heating.)
3)
Place the piece on the mat, image up, & use the stylus tool or orange
stick to trace the outline and details of the image just next to the line.
4)
Turn the piece over and push out the metal on the inside of the lines you
traced.
5)
Turn the piece over and re-trace the outlines and details to “pop” the
image.
6)
Color in the image using the permanent markers, being careful to not
erase the stamped lines.
7)
Use the tracing wheel to “stipple” the background around the image.
8)
Use the strong adhesive to attach the worked piece of copper to a
foundation piece of card stock, decorative box top, or other project.
This technique is quite stunning and can be used for any
detailed image. Please make sure the area you are working in is well ventilated
and be careful when handling the hot metal!
