Faux Leather Batik -- By: Susan Chong **Please give proper credit if sharing or copying this tutorial
Supplies: Brown paper (grocery bags or lunch bags work well) A variety of Dye Inks Water Rubber Gloves Plastic Wash Basin Take a piece of brown paper anywhere from 6 x 6 to 12 x 12 inches. Wad up into a ball and unfold several times. Soak the paper with water and wad and unfold one more time. Take care not to tear the paper. Lay the unfolded paper onto the bottom of the plastic wash basin. Drop several complimentary colors of dye ink directly onto the paper. Allow to soak into the paper for a minute or so.
Put on your gloves and pick the paper up and wad and carefully unfold a few times. Squeeze the wadded ball tightly to spread the ink. Finally, unfold the paper and lay flat to dry. (Be careful where you dry your paper, the dye ink will bleed out underneath) After completely dry, you may use as a background paper or stamp images directly onto the paper.
**VARIATIONS: After you have applied your dye ink and let set for a minute, you can quickly rinse the paper before finishing as above. This will result in a more muted tone. You may also slightly water down your dye ink PRIOR to dropping onto the brown paper. This will also result in more muted tones. As always……experiment and have fun!! Sample Card:
