Bubble Background—by: Susan Chong

(Please give proper credit if you share this tutorial)

I found that I needed some patience to make this background. I had to try several times to get a final look that I liked. That being said, I’m glad that I hung in there!! I really do like the look of these backgrounds and I will definitely do some more! Sometimes it takes a little persistence to get where you want to be! J

Supplies:

Dishwashing Liquid

Any brand -- Dye reinkers, acrylic paints, or food coloring

Straws

Plastic/disposable containers. Try different sizes and shapes. (Tall, short, flat, slender, wide……etc.)

LOTS of paper towels (this technique is messy!)

Matte or Glossy cardstock (try both!)

A little patience

Sense of adventure

Place approximately 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid into container. Add about 1 cup water. Stir to form a little froth. Add several drops of color (dye reinker, food coloring, or acrylic paint) Give it a good stir.

Before you start blowing bubbles, make sure you have LOTS of paper towels or some other protection to cover your work surface. This technique gets very messy due to "spill over" J

Using the straw, blow some bubbles. Vary your blowing speed to make different sized bubbles.

Holding your paper flat, lower your paper on top of the bubbles. Matte paper will pop the bubbles easily and IF you have enough color in the water/soap mixture, you will see "bubble rings" on your paper. Keep blowing and dipping until you achieve the look you desire.

**IF YOU DON’T SEE ANY COLOR APPEAR ON YOUR PAPER, ADD MORE COLOR TO THE WATER** It may take some time and a lot of ink to get the color you want. Be patient and keep trying!

**IF YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH BUBBLES OR THEY POP BEFORE TOO SOON, ADD MORE SOAP**

Again, be willing to experiment with your supplies. Try more soap or try a different soap!

Glossy paper tends to "pick up" the bubbles instead of popping them. So, I set the paper down and carefully laid a piece of paper towel over the cardstock to pop the bubbles. Remove the paper towel and repeat until you have a look you like.

Once your first color has dried, you can keep adding different colors or use as is. You can use these papers as a background OR you may stamp directly onto the pattern.

Cool benefit to being messy:……..the paper towels are now an awesome paper for backgrounds/collage!
